Position Title: Audiovisual Technical Specialist

Supervisor: Events Manager

Department: Director’s Office

Grade: 55, non-exempt, union

Hours: Full-time, 35 hrs. per week, Monday-Friday. Evening and weekend hours may be required



The Audiovisual Technical Specialist works as a member of the Events Team and is responsible for assemblyoperation, and maintenance of sound and video equipment including speakers, microphones, video monitors, switcher, sound mixer, and a still camera that are used to enhance live events and institutional video/photography projects. The Audiovisual Technical Specialist closely collaborates with stakeholders throughout the planning process to ensure a comprehensive understanding of technology and support expectations leading up to events and projects. Provides professional and thorough customer service for speakers, VIP guests, event attendees, and staff collaborators.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Setup and operate audiovisual equipment for trainings, presentations, meetings, events, and institutional video/photography projects; operate cameras and lighting system, adjust microphones, and run virtual event software (e.g., Zoom).
  • Provide technical support for hybrid events, webinars, teleconferences, symposia, public lectures, meetings and other virtual and/or hybrid events.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate graphics used in displays.
  • Provide excellent customer service: address technical questions and problems related to A/V equipment and presentation computers, troubleshoot presentation software and virtual event software (e.g., Zoom). Suggest improvements and enhancements to ensure best possible production.
  • Coordinate A/V checks with host departments and speakers, provide guidance on best practices, and confirm speaker consent for video recordings.
  • Organize run-of-show schedule for event participants to ensure seamless production of speaker presentations.
  • Produce and edit live video content and manage storage of content; collaborate with host department to edit video content and provide final copy to Digital Content Editor for the Dumbarton Oaks website.
  • Provide still photography for events and institutional projects: group and individual photographs, event candids, photography of museum objects, and other requests as needed.
  • Perform monthly inventory management of all equipment and accessories: clean and maintain equipment, report damages or needed repairs/upgrades to the Events Manager and IT Director as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant job experience.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of industry-standard formats and techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge of (video and still) camera and lighting techniques, and familiarity with editing software
  • Thorough understanding of virtual event software for hybrid events and meetings
  • Creative and flexible with strong communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to interact with coworkers and event participants, often under deadline pressure
  •  Proficient in computer systems used in multimedia production, as well as Microsoft Office 365
  • Experience and knowledge with live sound recording and production is preferred
  • Experience with 3play Media for closed captioning services is preferred

Physical requirements:

  • Must be able to transport, assemble, maintain, and repair equipment used in multimedia production
  • May be required to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
