Byzantine Coins and Seals Summer Program

Alex Magnolia is a PhD candidate in the Department of History at the University of Minnesota. He holds a BA with distinction in political science from the University of Denver and an MA in history from the University of Northern Colorado. His dissertation focuses on the epistolary corpus of more than 200 letters of the tenth-century patriarch Nicholas I Mystikos, who kept correspondence with missionaries, foreign heads of state, popes, and many others. Magnolia has contributed to the journal Hortulus and forthcoming publications. He is broadly interested in constructions of gender and sexuality, structures of kinship and family, Roman identity, and numismatics, among other themes in the Byzantine millennium.
