“A New History of Byzantium”

Anthony Kaldellis

The Ohio State University, Byzantine Studies Visiting Scholar

Anthony Kaldellis is writing a new history of Byzantium from the fourth to the fifteenth century, which will likely be published in two volumes. Its narrative framework will integrate new findings and models regarding Byzantine economy, demography, law, taxation, and religious identity, and will pose large interpretive questions about the major developments in each period. He aspires to write this, moreover, in accessible, entertaining, and jargon-free prose.

Anthony Kaldellis is a professor and chair of the Department of Classics at the Ohio State University. He has written many monographs on Byzantine history, culture, and literature, ranging from the fourth century to the fifteenth, and has translated many Byzantine texts in English, including historiographical, hagiographical, and rhetorical texts.
