Lizzie McCord graduated in December of 2021 from Harvard College with a degree in History and a Language Citation in Spanish. Lizzie’s senior thesis, “Soil, Self-Government, and Slave Ownership: Slavery and the Cherokee Struggle for Sovereignty, 1835-1860” investigated the connection between the Cherokee Nation’s efforts to preserve national sovereignty and Cherokees’ enslavement of Black people, as well as anti-slavery efforts in the Cherokee Nation. Lizzie is interested in studying interactions between Indigenous and Black people and communities in the 18th and 19th century Atlantic World.
