Beatrix Farrand’s initial intention for the garden was to mimic a giardini segreti. This style refers to a secret garden that, according to Farrand, places the “emphasis on contrast between sunlight and shade, the sound of falling water, the scent of herbs, the movement of wind and birds.” Originally made of heartwood tidewater cypress and lead, a red cedar replacement modelled on the original design was rebuilt under the direction of Ruth Havey in 1955. The shade and height that the arbor provide contrast with the sun-exposed horizontality of the rest of terrace.
