The Blisses intended to use the Orangery, in part, for entertaining their guests. Whether for tea or drinks, the windows provide an exceptional view out to the gardens. Farrand writes in her Plant Book for Dumbarton Oaks that the view from the Orangery looking south is “one of the real horticultural events of the Dumbarton season.” To that end, and with the comfort of the Bliss’s guests in mind, Farrand installed a canopy that projected out from the Orangery’s north face to provide sun protection. The canopy is no longer present, but the Orangery’s comfortable temperature and beautiful views continue to fulfill Farrand’s intention for the space.
