Notes

BnF Ancien fonds: Codex parisinus græcus 451 (Fontainebleau-Regius 2271).  Parchment, 403 folios, anno 914.  Clement of Alexandria, Pseudo-Justin Martyr, Eusebius the Arian, Athenagoras of Athens.

The scribe is Βαάνης νοτάριος (copyist also of Mus. Brit. Harleianus 5694; Vogel & Gardthausen p. 48), writing for Arethas. For a reproduction (taken from Omont's Fac-similés) from Vaánis's Clement, with transcription and short palæographical notes, see Thompson in our Bibliography and Online Resources (Πανομοιότυπον 37 in Lambros's translation, unnumbered in Thompson's original).

Fol. 1r.  Clementis Alexandrini Liber adhortatorius (TLG 0555.001).

A second hand: «†ἐγράφη χειρὶ Βαάνους νότου [οὕτω] Ἀρέθ(α) ἀρχὶ ἐπισκόπ(ου) Καισαρεί(ας) Καππαδοκί(ας)· ἔτει κόσμου· ͵Ϛυκβʹ :~» A third, European hand: «Lege: Ἐγράφη χειρὶ Βαάνους νοταρίου Ἀρέθᾳ ἀρχιεπισκόπῳ κ.τ.λ.» (the "&c." in the original). We assume with Allen et al. (see Bibliography) that abbreviations all represent the genitive case, but two of their other examples do have «Ἀρέθᾳ ἐπισκόπῳ».

Fols. 402-403 are in uncials.

(Inner part of backboard?)  A handy note: «Ἀθηναγόρου Πρεσβεία ὑπὲρ Χριστιανῶν 322».
