Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections

Dumbarton Oaks is very pleased to co-sponsor with the National Gallery of Art a program of lectures related to the exhibition: “Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections.” Currently on view at the National Gallery through March 2, 2014 the exhibition will then travel to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California from April 9 through August 25, 2014.
On January 16, Professor Sharon Gerstel will give a public lecture, co-sponsored by Dumbarton Oaks, at the National Gallery of Art entitled “Witnessing Byzantium: The Greek Perspective.” A colloquium entitled “Visualizing Community: City and Village in Byzantine Greece” will take place at the National Gallery of Art on November 15 (open to the public) and at Dumbarton Oaks on November 16 (by invitation only, due to space limitations). In another co-sponsored event, on February 27, Professor Robin Cormack will lecture at the National Gallery of Art on “‘Fair Greece, Sad Relic:’ How did Byzantium Reform Classical Greek Art?”
In view of its long tradition of supporting Byzantine studies through fellowships, publications, and project grants, as well as its world-class art collection, Dumbarton Oaks is delighted to be collaborating with the National Gallery on scholarly programs accompanying this important exhibition, the first on Byzantine art to be hosted at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
