The Tempest Trio | January 12 and 13, 2014

Although pianist Alon Goldstein, violinist  Ilya Kaler, and cellist Amit Peled continue to enjoy hugely successful careers as soloists, the three friends chose to indulge their passion for playing chamber music by forming the Tempest Trio. The recently configured ensemble typically receives accolades wherever it performs, and On January 12 and 13, the Tempest Trio made its eagerly anticipated Washington, D.C., debut in the Music Room.

Of the three works on the program, Leonard Bernstein's "Piano Trio" was arguably the most fascinating, written when the composer was a nineteen-year-old student at Harvard. Quirky and a joy to listen to, it had Lenny's musical DNA all over it, foreshadowing works to come. The ensemble opened the program with Haydn's "Gypsy" Trio and closed with Dvorak's Trio No. 3 in F Minor. A standing ovation was rewarded with an encore of a movement from one of Beethoven's trios.
