The Bliss Symposium Awards are travel grants for Harvard students wishing to attend Dumbarton Oaks’ annual symposia in Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, or Garden and Landscape Studies.

The Byzantine Studies Symposium will be held April 20–21, 2018; the Garden and Landscape Studies Symposium will take place May 4–5, 2018; the Pre-Columbian Studies Symposium is held October 6–7, 2017. Further information on these symposia, including their topics, is available under Upcoming Events.

The awards offer up to $500 in reimbursement for the cost of travel to Washington, D.C., local accommodations, and other approved expenses related to symposium attendance. Symposium registration fees are waived for holders of the Bliss Symposium Awards. Successful applicants will be asked to assist with some conference logistics, such as registration and/or facilitating the discussion periods.

To be eligible for a Bliss Symposium Award, applicants must be currently enrolled Harvard students. Preference will be given to students in fields related to the areas of study at Dumbarton Oaks. Candidates should prepare an application that consists of (1) a brief cover letter stating why the symposium is of interest, (2) a résumé, and (3) one letter of recommendation from the applicant’s advisor or department chair. The cover letter and résumé should be combined into a single PDF and sent via email with the subject heading “Bliss Symposium Awards” to the appropriate study program: Byzantine@doaks.org, Landscape@doaks.org, or Pre-Columbian@doaks.org. Applications should be submitted at least four weeks prior to the symposium. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the appropriate email address above. Recipients of the Bliss Symposium Awards are responsible for making their own arrangements for travel and accommodations. No housing will be available at Dumbarton Oaks during the symposia. Funds will be disbursed after the successful applicant has submitted a travel expense form and original receipts.
