George Laurence Nelson

George Laurence Nelson was a 20th-century American painter. He was born as George Laurence Hirschberg in 1887 in New Rochelle, NY; both of his parents were important artists in the American art scene, Carl Hirschberg and Alice Kerr-Nelson. Nelson studied and taught art in New York City before moving to Europe for two years to continue his studies. In 1919 he moved to Seven Hearths in Kent, CT, where he began a summer school for painting and where he lived for the rest of his life. He married the writer Helen Charlotta Redgrave in 1916. After enjoying a life of success as a portrait painter, he died in 1978.
