S. H. Kress & Co.

Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, USA, 1896–1981 (Publisher and Vendor)

S. H. Kress & Co. published and distributed postcards through their chain of "five and dime" retail stores in hundreds of locations across the United States. Samuel Henry Kress (1863–1955) established the first store in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, to sell dry goods, stationary, and postcards. Through the production and sale of postcards, Kress and the Kress stores attempted to promote a modern public image of clean and picturesque streetscapes populated with businesses. In 1964, the Kress company was purchased by Genesco, which slowly began closing the business.
