HISTORICAL NOTE

Ernst Kitzinger was a German-born Byzantine and medieval art historian who spent much of his adult life in America and England. Kitzinger was born in Munich, Germany in 1912. He attended the Max-Gymnasium in Munich, where he graduated in 1931, and universities in Munich where he studied art history, archaeology, and philosophy between 1931 and 1934. Kitzinger left Germany in 1935 and went to Rome and then to England, where he accepted a position at the British Museum. When England entered the war against Germany, Kitzinger was interned as an enemy alien and evacuated to Australia. After his release in 1941, he emigrated to the United States where he was appointed a Junior Fellow in Byzantine Studies (1941–1943) at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, D.C.

Kitzinger returned to Dumbarton Oaks in 1945 as a Fellow in Byzantine Studies (1945–1946). He became Assistant Professor (1946–1951), Associate Professor (1951–1956), and Professor (1956–1966) of Byzantine Art and Archaeology at Dumbarton Oaks. He was a Fulbright Scholar (1950–1951), undertaking research on the Byzantine mosaics of the Norman kingdom of Sicily, and a Guggenheim Fellow (1953–1954), continuing field research in Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Turkey. Between 1955 and 1966, Kitzinger was Director of Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks. In 1966, Kitzinger accepted an appointment at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1967, he became Harvard University’s first A. Kingsley Porter University Professor. In 1979, he retired from Harvard and moved to Oxford, England. He died in Poughkeepsie, New York in 2003.
