Royall Tyler to Robert Woods Bliss, July 8, 1939

8.VII.39 Duxbury

Dear Robert.

Many thanks for your letter with the list copies. The whereabouts of this letter are unknown. I’m abashed when I think of the circumstances in which you wrote it—my poor! I shall hardly breathe again till I hear you have safely reached Sta Barbara. I’ll let you know what cable address I can get registered. And also what old F. says. . . . . ! ! !

I’m glad you’ve made an attempt, via Eric, to get some more light on the MSBZ.1939.12. at Sothebys. The chances appear to be that it is a really good one. They come up so rarely that the occasion is tempting.

I went up to Cambridge the other day & lunched with Paul J. S., & had a very good talk with him about Bill. I feel quite sure that the course how embarked upon, leading one hopes to a M.D.,Masters degree. is the very wisest that could be desired, and I’m endlessly grateful to you for bringing it about. Bill himself is very happy about it, and seems quite at home in the Fogg world.

I liked your sarcophagus,BZ.1936.65. now lent to the Fogg, very much indeed.

I cherish the hope that, this side of Paradise, we may sometime have an undisturbed, unpreoccupied time-oasis in which just to talk things over and over and over. It would be good.

I get on quite well with my grandson,Royall Tyler (b. 1936), the first child of Bettine Tyler and William Royall Tyler, was born in London. After earning a BA in Far Eastern Languages from Harvard University and a PhD in Japanese literature from Columbia University, he became a scholar and translator of Japanese literature. He presently lives in Australia in New South Wales. who is a superb golden brown colour all over, & spends a lot of time on the beach. Betsy has become a marvelously expert clam-digger, even better than Bill, and we gorge ourselves on those succulent bivalves, which I adore. BetbillThe Bliss abbreviation for Bettine Tyler and William Royall Tyler. & MinimusRoyall Tyler’s nickname for his grandson. send you their love—and I, my fondest, to both Mildred and you, dear Robert.

Yrs
