Commentary

This coin is an imitative type of Alexios I Komnenos. See T. Bertelè, “Monete bizantine: Album con elenco descrittivo di monete bizantine (1222–1453): Note di studio personale,” 130 (this coin). Compare to Zervos, “A Barbarous Hybrid Tetarteron of the Time of Alexios I Komnenos” (this is probably from the same dies as his fig. 2). See also P. Papadopoulou, De l’unité à l’éclatement: La monnaie et son usage dans le monde byzantin (1092–1261),  2: no. 76.

Acquisition History

From the Bertelé collection (this coin came in with the rest of the coins in 1956 or 1960 but was not accessioned until July 2004)
