Commentary

This coin is a solidus of class (a). When Grierson published the Sicilian hoard in 1965 (“Two Byzantine Coin Hoards of the Seventh and Eighth Centuries at Dumbarton Oaks”) he overlooked this coin from the same source. See also the complements added by S. Bendall, “Notes on Two Byzantine Hoards: 1. An Eighth-Century Hoard at Dumbarton Oaks: An Appendix.”

MIB 3:263, no. 21.
