Commentary

According to Grierson’s notes, this coin is quite anomalous. As far as we know, the type with X was replaced by I in year 9 (unknown) or 10 (DOC 1:350, no. 203), and the X had only P beneath, not HEP. This is a combination of the two, but it has every appearance of being a genuine product of the mint.

MIBEC 161, no. 101C (citing this coin as DO [n.a.] together with one in the former Hollschek collection [Longuet, “Die unedierten byzantinischen Münzen des Wiener Kabinettes,” no. 264]).
