Commentary

Variant of DOC 1:56, no. 59 (Grierson notes: “definitely without officina letter, the E perhaps doubling as such”). MIBE 99, no. 30, cites and illustrates this coin. Hahn (p. 34) observes rightly that the letter Π for penta “could also allude to the mint (polis for Constantinople as the polis par excellence).” Grierson’s hypothesis that the E is an officina indication seems all the more plausible when one considers that the MIBE no. 29 issue with Π and officina letters is only attested for officinae A through Δ.
