Commentary
On the coin’s reverse, beneath , there is an obliterated and illegible countermark. The countermark above , , is the most common type of countermark representing the names of Herakleios and Herakleios Constantine applied to coins circulating in Syria in the last years of Byzantine rule. See G. Bijovsky, Gold Coin and Small Change: Monetary Circulation in Fifth–Seventh Century Byzantine Palestine and W. Schulze, I. Schulze, and W. Leimenstoll, “Heraclian Countermarks on Byzantine Copper Coins in Seventh-Century Syria,” 1–27.
Cf. DOC 2.1:383, no. 315 (for another specimen with this countermark).
