Commentary

Cf. DOC 2.2:561, no. 72, but with much abbreviated obverse inscription and cross after reverse inscription. Hahn (MIB 3:154) puts it under the “Italian imitations,” but recognizes that distinguishing these from the ones he considers to be “imperial” is sometimes problematic. Cécile Morrisson agrees with him that “only a future intensive collection of material for die study could bring more clarity in this regard.” For an example of the input of archaeological finds of Italian gold coins, see A. Rovelli, “Un tremisse di Giustiniano II da San Vincenzo al Volturno: Osservazioni sulle emissioni auree dell’Italia bizantina.”

MIB 3: no. X14, plate 34 (as “Italian Imitation,” this coin illustrated).
