Commentary

According to Grierson, this coin is reminiscent of the follis of Syracuse, no. 17 from Ricotti (cited in MIB 3:269, no. 36, illustrated on plate 42), but the fabric and officina letter show it to be Constantinople. The Λ on the coin’s reverse above the mark of value is a fragment of a monogram.

Cf. DOC 2.2:615–16, no. 8 (where the date is marked with an , not an I as here).

MIB 3:268, no. 33.
