Acquisition History
Gift of Philip Grierson, 13 September 1972; given to Grierson by John Sloan
Commentary
Grierson noted: “Compare to DOC 1:372, no. 295, but these have [one] step above and below cross. Identification of emperor is uncertain; it could be Justinian.”
Grierson identified this coin to be of an “uncertain Italian mint.” Hahn and Metlich (MIBEC 170, no. V140) attributed this coin to Sicily. But Morrisson and Arslan (“Monete e moneta a Roma nell’alto Medioevo,” no. 12) reattributed it to Rome on the basis of local finds.
