Commentary
The first specimen of this issue, in the Academy collection in Bucharest, was published by Dimitrijević (“La monnaie commune des empereurs Jean V Paléologue et Jean VI Cantacuzène”) and reproduced by Grierson (Byzantine Coins, 326, plate 83). The second one, published by Bendall in Numismatic Circular (“Another New Silver Basilikon of John V and VI, 1347–1352,” 102, fig. 2) was bought by Fleischmann (CF 67-a-03). An even cruder specimen appeared in Classical Numismatic Group, Auction 99, 12 May 2015, lot 886. According to Morrisson, therefore, there are at least four specimens of this type.
