Commentary
Same obverse die as MIB 3:302, no. X27 (all the other specimens have the same die according to Pottier). This coin has traces of overstriking on its reverse. The other similar specimens known to Metlich (“Another Heraclius Follis from Jerusalem,” nos. 10–11, plate 16) are overstruck on Justinian's folles, which explains their higher weight, surprising for an emergency issue in a besieged city. A specimen from the same dies as this one was offered to the Israel Museum in 1999 by Maryon and Abraham Sofaer from Palo Alto, California (“Selected Acquisitions,” 104–5).
