Notes

Bodleianus Holkhamicus græcus 6 (olim Earl of Leicester Library 172).

According to De Ricci (sub lem.; see Bibliography): Vellum (12th cent.) with a few pages of paper (15th cent.). Palamas contra Barlaam. "Given by the Cretan metropolite Nicephorus to the church of S. Demetrius at Sparta."

Our film WEST.OXF.1.1 goes through 170v, which is mutilated and has a Bodleian stamp, and seems to be the end of the codex.

Barbour:  "Synodicon with ecphonetic notation, containing the τόμος τῆς ἑνώσεως of 20, the ὅρος of each of th councils of Chalcedon (23), Constantinople II (47) and III (6), and Nicaea II (96), and the synodicon of orthodoxy (132), each for recital on a different day.

"Written 1055-55 in Antioch or Jerusalem. Note by scribe: «...ήθσητι κ(ύρι)ε τοῦ δούλου...θεοφυλάκτου ἀνα...ου κουβου. Καὶ δομεστίκου...υαγοῦς π(ατ)ριαρχικοῦ...ρέτου ἀντιόχ. Καὶ χάρισαι...τῶν ὑγίαν καὶ ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτίων [sic]. Given by Nicephoros Moschopoulos metropolitan of Crete to S. Demetrios, Mistra, restored by him in 1292.  A.E. Seidel (Berlin) sale 1718.

"Parchment, iv+173 leaves, 220x160 mm."

The longest description we know of is in Greek Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library (anno 1966; no. 18, pp. 19sq.; see our Bibliography). For sample of the hand of the greater part of the manuscript, see Plate no. VII of the same book, taken from fol. 71v. Also includes further bibliography (Jenkins & Mango; Laurent). See also Wilson, no. 30 (with description in vol. 1 and a larger plate, also of 71v, in vol. 2).

Fols. 122-127 (trimmed and presumably inserted?) in a different hand.

122r:  end of Palamas Homily 49 (TLG 3254.009), from «...τοσοῦτον ἀπεσχεν ἀμύνασθαι τοὺς ἐπηρεάζοντας...» to the end.

122v  Βαρλαὰμ καὶ Ἀκινδύνῳ καὶ τοῖς ὁπαδοῖς καὶ διαδόχοις αὐτῶν ἀνάθεμα.

125r at bottom of page, not between works and not mentioned in the catalogues:  «†Ἰωάννου τοῦ ὀρθοδόξου, ἀοιδήμου καὶ μακαρίου τοῦ βασιλέως ἡμῶν, τοῦ Παλαιολόγ[ου] αἰωνίῳ μνήμῃ, †Ἰωάννου ὀρθοδόξου ἀοιδήμου καὶ μακαρίου βασιλέως ἡμῶν τοῦ Καντακουζηνοῦ, τοὺ διὰ τοῦ θείου καὶ ἀγγελικοῦ σχήματος μετονομασθέντος Ἰωάσαφ μοναχοῦ, τοῦ γενναίου ἀνδρισαμένου ὑπὲρ τῶν ὀρθῶν τῆς εὐσεβείας δογμάτων καὶ κατὰ τῆς αἱρέσεως τῆς πονηρᾶς καὶ ἀθέου» and following line trimmed off. Cf. fols. 148v, 149v 158v, 160v: main body in large, archaizing letters, with notes at the bottom of the page, also in a later hand; 161r at the top; 167v-169r.
