Sarah Wyman Whitman painted, practiced interior decorating, designed stained glass windows, and consulted the publisher Houghton, Mifflin on book decoration. Many of her designs have a distinctive Art Nouveau feel. This design, a gilt pattern of poppies with heart-shaped roots, is among her most well-known. Later editions usually used green cloth instead of cream. The book was printed by the Riverside Press for Houghton, Mifflin.
