Francescantonio Zaccaria (1714-1795). Istituzione antiquario-numismatica, o sia Introduzione allo studio delle antiche medaglie: in due libri proposta. Rome: Monaldini and Zempel, 1772.
Father Zaccaria was a prolific author and editor, yet he is lesser known than his colleague Ludovico Antonio Muratori whom he succeeded as librarian and archivist at the Biblioteca Estense in Modena.
Continuing in the “handbook tradition” of Jobert and Patin, his well-researched volume includes a history of coinage, a list of known Greek and Roman mints, a chronological list of coin legends that extends through the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans, and specimens of fake coins.
