Paphinia grandis, Columbien, Rchb. Fil.

Little is known about Caroline Maschek, whose authorship is conveyed by the signature “KBM,” other than her involvement with painting some three hundred species of orchids owned by Baron Theodor Karel Josef Hruby z Gelenj (1826–1914) in Petschkau (Pecky) castle east of Prague. Hruby, a well-known orchid collector and connoisseur who relied upon international networks of botanical travelers and entrepreneurs to build his amazing collection, eventually sold it to Emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria (r. 1848–1916), being unable to find skilled gardeners to take care of the plants. A recent acquisition, Dumbarton Oaks owns seventy-five gouache paintings from the original set, with their dark background offsetting the luminous delicacy of the exotic flowers.
