Published a few years before the burst of the Tulipmania bubble sent shockwaves through the European economy, De florum cultura reflected a consuming passion for floriculture that swept across the continent. This treatise, written by the Jesuit Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1584–1655) and dedicated to the owner of a celebrated flower garden, Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597–1679), featured illustrations by many leading artists active in Rome at the time. The image of an ornamental vase from book 4, which deals with the arrangements of cut flowers—including methods for changing their odors and colors through the use of perfume infusions and colored inks—was designed and engraved by Florentine painter Anna Maria Vaiani.
