Commentary
Note the eleventh-century seal of a George Hexamilites, protospatharios, judge of the Hippodrome and of the Armeniakoi; it is decorated with a bust of the Virgin (Konstantopoulos, Stamoules, no. 78). We also know of a later seal of Epiphanios Hexamilites, vestarches and judge of the Velum, also decorated with a bust of the Virgin (Laurent, Vatican, no. 83=Laurent, Corpus II, no.846); of the seal of Michael Hexamilites who was judge of Paphlagonia (BZS.1958.106.5507); and of many seals of a Sergios Hexamilites who lived in the eleventh century and occupied several positions in the judiciary (Laurent, Corpus II, nos. 849, 850, 882, 1031). A judge named Hexamilites (no Christian name attested) is mentioned in the Peira (7,15; 41,9).
