Commentary

The reading of the reverse inscription is not clear. The owner's name seems certain, as does the office of domestikos; but we cannot be sure whether the office following is kourator or komes. We have opted for the former but do not exclude the possibility of the other. In his unpublished catalogue of the Shaw catalogue, Laurent read the last two lines as τῶν θεο[ν(ύμων) χ]ωρίω[ν] which accords with the letters visible. Its meaning, however, is unclear.
