Lord, help your servant Baanes patrikios, magistros, and komes of Hieron.

Commentary

Hieron (modern Anadolu kavak) on the eastern shore of the entrance to the Bosporus from the Black Sea, was the seat of a customs official (komes) appointed there permanently from the time of Justinian I and still attested at the beginning of the ninth century: Janin, CPbyz., 441-42; Bibicou, Douanes, 78-79, 203; Ahrweiler, Mer, 75-76. We know of one further eighth-century komes of Hieron named George (Zacos-Veglery, no. 1333).
