Obverse

Bust of the Virgin holding the Christ child on her left arm. Sigla on either side: ̅-θ̅υ : Μ(ήτη)ρ Θ(εο)ῦ. Circular inscription within the upper border of dots:

Θ(εοτό)κε β(οή)θ(ει) τῷ σῷ δούλῳ

Reverse

Inscription of five lines, preceded and followed by an ornament. Border of dots.

Translation

Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Πέτρῳ βέστῃ καὶ κατεπάνω Μελιτινῆς τῷ Γυμνῷ.

Mother of God, help your servant Peter Gymnos, vestes and katepano of Melitene.

Commentary

The seal of a katepano of Melitene and Lykandos is published in Sig., 282-283, cf. Byz. 9 (1934) 367-371.

At a later time, Peter Gymnos became anthypatos, patrikios and judge of the Thrakesion (BZS.1955.1.3043 and BZS.1955.1.3044).
