The Virgin orans with a bust of the Christ (not in a medallion) before her. Sigla: Μ̅Θ̅ : Μ(ήτηρ) Θ(εοῦ). Indeterminate border.

Reverse

St Nicholas blessing with his right hand and holding a gospel book with his left. Inscription in two columns: ̣|Ν|Ι – Κ̣|ΛΑ̣|Ο, : ὁ ἅ(γιος) Νικ(ό)λαο(ς). Indeterminate border.

Commentary

The bust of Christ does not appear to be within a medallion but rests directly within the folds of the Virgin’s maphorion, a detail seen on a number of sphragistic examples belonging to the second half of the twelfth century and later.
