Translation

Lord or Mother of God, help your servant Anastasios, imperial kandidatos and protonotarios of the strategos of the Thrakesioi.

Commentary

The expression "protonotarios of the strategos" used on this seal is revealing with regard to the place of the protonotarios in the administrative hierarchy of the theme in the eighth century. It should be seen in connection with Theophanes, 445, where the chronicler speaks of the "notarios of the strategos" Michael Lachanodrakon, Leo Kouloukes, who was sent by his master to sell all the monasteries and their possessions within the Thrakesion.
