Commentary
The owner of this seal appears to be the Eumathios Philokales, first mentioned in 1189-1190 as an akolouthos of the Varangian Guard and later as a key figure in the dealings between Issac II and Friedrich Barbarossa and Henry VI. He is attested as logothetes of the sekreta in 1204. See the remarks in Wassiliou-Seibt's commentary to the entry in her catalogue cited above.
