Translation

Σφραγ(ὶς) δικαστοῦ Μακεδονίας, Θρᾷκης τοῦ πατρικίου Ἰω(άννου) τοῦ Κοστομύρη.

Seal of the dikastes of Macedonia and Thrace, the patrikios John Kostomyres.

Commentary

The obverse is a twelve-syllable verse.

A similar seal is preserved in the Hermitage (M-6524). On the reverse the Christian name is spelled in full. Concerning variations in the spelling of the name Kostomyres, see A. K. Wassiliou, "Zur indirekten Überlieferung von Siegeln in byzantinischen Urkunden," 148–49.
