Commentary
The emperor has been identified as Leo III and the seal dated to 717 by Zacos and Veglery on the basis of iconographic details. Otherwise, it could have been dated to earlier fifteenth indictions, such as 686/7 or 701/2. The kandidatos John is not otherwise known to us.
