Commentary

The two monograms on the sides of the Virgin are unusual. We would expect a Θεοτόκε monogram on the left complemented by a βοήθει monogram on the right, but we find instead a combined Θεοτόκε βοήθει monogram and a Ἰωάννου monogram, that makes the reverse redundant.
