Commentary
The inscription consists of two twelve-syllable verses. The owner of this seal has been identified with a nephew of the Patriarch John Xiphilinos (1064–1075) on the grounds that the title protoproedros first appears in the 1060s (when Xiphilinos was already Patriarch) and that a John Xiphilinos "the younger" is attested in the sources. See the discussion and bibliography in Wassiliou-Seibt's entry, noted above.
