Translation

Κύριε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Θεοδώρῳ μαγίστρῳ καὶ δουκὶ Ἐδέστης τῷ Πηγονίτῃ.

Lord, help your servant Theodore Pegonites, magistros and doux of Edessa.

Commentary

According to Matthew of Edessa (tr. Dulaurier, 131), a certain Pegonites, governor of Edessa, had conspired in 1066/67 against the doux of Antioch, who had come to relieve him from a Seldjuk attack; for this reason, he was stripped of his post by Constantine X Doukas. Our seal confirms the veracity of Matthew’s information (Arutjunova, “Vizantijskie praviteli,” 144).
