Commentary

This is not a seal but a token or tessera. Its meaning is not clear. We propose the name Μιχαήλ as the reading of the monogram on the obverse but have no convincing explanation for the inscription on the reverse. The two letters could represent the number 28, or perhaps the first letter of the name Κωνσταντῖνος followed by the indiction year θ. Another possibility could be Κ(ύριος) (ὁ) Θ(εός).
