Collection of Royall Tyler (1884–1953), Paris; Gift of his son, William R. Tyler (1910–2003), Washington, DC, in 1972; Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, Washington, DC.

This fragment comprises two registers of animal and floral motifs in tapestry weave in pink-beige, red, yellow, green, blue, dark blue, and brown-beige. Remnants of the surrounding plain weave are apparent at the top left. Although highly fragmentary, the small size of this piece suggests it came from a dress textile, where doubled registers are common on sleevebands. The depictions of fish, floral motifs, and small birds (possibly ducks) identifies the iconography of the piece with the Nilotic scenes that were popular on dress and furnishing textiles alike.
