Plantings

The plantings in the Herbaceous Border create a lush tapestry of color. When they are in bloom, a visitor walking down the grass path feels completely ensconced by flowers. In recent years, planting in the Herbaceous Border has turned to focus on perennial varieties rather than annuals to create a continuous blooming cycle throughout the year. In preparation for the winter months, chrysanthemums blooming in the autumn are cut back and tulip bulbs are planted, all the while following Beatrix Farrand’s color specification that the Herbaceous Border reflect a “cooler” palette of violets, light blues, and pinks in contrast with the “hotter” colors of the Fountain Terrace.
