The reflecting pool is the centerpiece of the room. Originally a “cow pond,” likely where a natural spring came to the surface, Beatrix Farrand drew from the natural shape of the pond, sculpting it into an oval in 1926. One can walk around the pool in its entirety, admiring it from all angles and contemplating its reflections. The gray flagstones give the water a darkness that is far more natural than a built pool might otherwise appear. The reflections provide a rippling montage of ever-changing imagery against the backdrop of the garden room. Dappled sunlight falls on the pool’s surface through the surrounding trees, refracting to form a scintillating whole in the intimate surroundings of the Pool Theater.
