Terminus

The design of the terminus presented one of the greatest challenges in the garden, and its architecture was debated from the garden’s very conception. It evolved first from a tunnel, to an archway with steps, to a looking pool. Farrand and Bliss would spend their roughly three decades working together continuously tweaking the view of the North Vista. What finally emerged was the focus on the American Tulip Poplar trees that stand majestically at the terminus, suggesting that the American landscape was as powerful as any great work of art.
