South Gate

Designed in 1935, the south gate of the Fountain Terrace frames an important terminus of the view looking south from the garden room. On the other side of the gate, ensconced in an ivy bower, lies the Terrior Column, which also provides an endpoint to the east-west axis of the terraces beneath the Rose Garden. The gate is embellished with wisteria ornamentation and its center quatrefoil outlines the view into Fountain Terrace (and through to Arbor Terrace) from the southern pathway, creating a permeable boundary that beckons the visitor in.
