When Edward Linthicum purchased the estate in 1846, he inherited the Orangery that had been erected by Robert Beverly in the early 19th century. In addition to adding a monitor roof, Linthicum likely planted a creeping fig or Ficus pumila. Now well over 150 years old, the fig continues to grow in the Orangery. Its branches and vines extend over nearly every available inch of wall space, and cascade across each window. The Orangery provides an ideal climate for the Ficus pumila to grow.
