Stone Arch Bridge

Stone Arch Bridge

We believe Beatrix Farrand designed the arch stone bridge in Dumbarton Oaks Park as a replacement for a preexisting one that is found on nineteenth-century maps of the property. The bridge connects the loop walkway Farrand designed through the Park up and around the stream, acting as a threshold between the steep slope down from the formal gardens to the gentler expanse of the Woodland. As visitors emerge from the relative darkness of heavier woods, they find themselves in the open expanse of the meadows before crossing the bridge to reenter the gardens (before it was open to the public) or exit the Park. The bridge is constructed from roughly coursed stone and measures 31 feet long by 15 feet wide.
