“Ornament” Exhibition Opening Event

Dumbarton Oaks Museum
September 19, 2019
06:00 PM to 08:00 PM
Fully Booked

Celebrate the opening of our fall exhibition, Ornament: Fragments of Byzantine Fashion, with a curatorial presentation, a reception, and after-hours access to the galleries. Following an introduction by Jan Ziolkowski, director of Dumbarton Oaks, Ornament curator Elizabeth Dospěl Williams offers an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at the exhibition’s unique contents and design. Meet the curator in the galleries and then join us for a reception on the Music Room Terrace featuring beer, wine, and light fare.

Ornament: Fragments of Byzantine Fashion presents a selection of Dumbarton Oaks’ finest examples of dress from late antique and Byzantine Egypt. With their spectacular range of colors, patterns, and ornamental motifs, the textiles display the remarkable skill of ancient craftspeople and a compellingly modern aesthetic. Ornament also celebrates the publication of a digital catalogue of the textile collection and scholarly essays on textiles, available for free on the Dumbarton Oaks website starting this fall.
